Late 80s punk band from NYC. At one time had the former Beastie Boys drummer in the band, Kate Schnellebach. They broke up for most of the 2000s but reunited for Punk Rock Bowling last year. This should be a fun show. Too bad they aren’t at the Cobra for an aftershow as that would fit perfectly.
Saturday Preview – The Get Up Kids
This is a repost from 2019’s Riot Fest. I missed them then but any band getting this much love by Riot Mike deserves out attention.
An emo (they don’t like that term) or pop punk band from Kansas City, The Get Up Kids formed in the wake of Dookie and Smash blowing up in the mid-nineties. I’m seeing a pretty common theme about how many of these bands started in 1994/5/6. Another potential conflict band amidst the heavyweights on Friday. Give them a spin and see if they’re worthy.
Friday Preview – Lagwagon
Their sound immediately reminded me of NOFX. Without the potty humor. And more skate punk. And that makes sense as they came up from Santa Barbara in the early nineties along the same time as some other Cali faves like Green Day, Rancid, Pennywise, and NOFX. And they were quickly signed to Fat Mike’s Fat Wreck Chords label. Could have easily been a Surf City Blitz (R.I.P.) band.
Sunday Preview – The Linda Lindas
First off the entire band is between 13 and 18 years old. They’re from LA. And they are on Epitaph, which is huge street cred on its own. And they were “discovered” by Amy Poehler. Oh yeah, they’ve opened for Bikini Kill. They have chops. Stop reading and play some of their videos.
Saturday Preview – The Menzingers
A pop-ish punk band from Philly (or Scranton). I saw them open for Frank Turner at the Philadelphia Fillmore so at least they have that seal of approval. Oh yeah, they were really good too. Two clips from that show below. Also a clip from our favorite UK Subs/Guttermouth Long Beach bar, Alex’s. They’re playing an full album play of On The Impossible Past (10 year anniversary).
