The Hold Steady and The Front Bottoms

The Hold Steady

The Hold Steady is a Brooklyn-based rock band formed in 2003, known for their lyrically rich storytelling, classic rock influences, and themes of redemption, addiction, and youth culture. Fronted by Craig Finn, their music blends indie rock, heartland rock, and post-punk revival, often featuring recurring characters and vivid narratives.

What to Expect at a Hold Steady Live Show:

  • Top-tier live energy: They’re rated in the top 10% of all live performers, with shows described as intense, exuberant, anthemic, and genuine.
  • Craig Finn’s storytelling: His spoken-sung delivery and charismatic stage presence make each show feel like a communal experience.
  • Fan-favorite setlists: Expect songs from across their discography, especially from Boys and Girls in AmericaSeparation Sunday, and newer albums like The Price of Progress.
  • Engaged crowd: Their fanbase is passionate, often singing along to every word and creating a celebratory atmosphere.
  • Concert length: Shows typically run between 45 minutes to just over an hour and 40 minutes.

If you love narrative-driven rock with a Springsteen-meets-punk vibe, The Hold Steady delivers a powerful and heartfelt live experience.

The Front Bottoms

The Front Bottoms are an indie rock/folk punk band from Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, formed in 2006. The core duo consists of Brian Sella (vocals/guitar) and Mat Uychich (drums), often joined by touring members to round out their sound.

What to Expect at a Front Bottoms Live Show:

  • High-energy, emotionally charged performances: Their shows are known for being both fun and cathartic, with fans singing every word back to the band.
  • Relatable, quirky lyrics: Their songs often blend humor, heartbreak, and awkward honesty—think diary entries set to catchy riffs.
  • Intimate crowd connection: Brian Sella’s conversational stage presence makes even large venues feel personal.
  • Genre-blending sound: Expect a mix of acoustic punk, indie rock, and emo-pop, with a raw, DIY vibe.
  • Fan-favorite singalongs: Tracks like “Twin Size Mattress,” “Flashlight,” and “Be Nice to Me” are staples that ignite the crowd.

Their live shows feel like a shared experience—equal parts concert and emotional release.

Riot Fest 22…are we gonna do this?

It’s looking more and more likely. At least a few days and a few aftershows perhaps. Saturday seems to be the easy no brainer with a lot of favorites. Friday and Sunday….when in Rome…

But in preparation, here’s a quick shot of some of the Saturday favorites. These need no introduction as we’ve seen them live in one place or the other that last few years. And these are what drive Saturday.
